Journey towards Baby Steps : IVF Success Story

After 9 years of marriage, 3 failed IVF cycles and 5 transfer failures, I gave birth to my handsome twin boys. This is the story of my life, my fertility journey! A story of hopes and frustrations, of joys and tears, how I coped up from multiple failures and then stepping into motherhood with twins. I am sharing this story for I know how it feels to struggle with infertility, how lonely you feel, how you want to give up every time and how you pull yourself back again. I am sharing to tell you that ‘You are not alone’ and ‘it is a tough journey, but it is worth it’.

I remember my failed IVF cycles.

I remember switching the doctors and IVF clinics.

I remember all my surgeries. I remember how my anxieties levelled up by desperately waiting for the report results to come out. And finally happiness came our way and we were out of the dark clouds which surrounded us for so long.

I have been married for 9 years in a joint family. After 1 year of the marriage, we started planning for our family but I was not able conceive. In 2013, I underwent laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy are done to examine the inside of the uterus to diagnose further treatment or surgery. During this process it was revealed that my tubes were blocked and beaded. The fertility doctor suggested IVF.

At the same time, doctors also had a slight doubt that I was suffering from Tuberculosis. For my satisfaction, I did a biopsy test to check if I was really diagnosed with TB and the reports were negative. However, the doctors still insisted to go for TB treatment which came as a surprise to me as I had not been diagnosed with TB so why to start its treatment. So I and my husband decided to change our doctor.

Failed IVF | Feeling Despair

First and foremost, we tried to conceive naturally for almost 1.5years but there was no positive outcome. We were apprehensive about the process of Intrauterine Insemination (IUI). Nevertheless, I and my husband took the step and we went through IUI almost 6 times from a renowned hospital in Gurgaon. But to add on to my problems, all of them failed.  Post repeated failures, we decided to opt for In Vitro fertilisation (IVF) in the year 2015.

I started with my first IVF process in Gurgaon and my 4 embryos were transferred in the same cycle but it failed. My self-confidence was shattered and negativity was looming on my head at its peak. Pressure from society was mounting which further exacerbated my mental stress. We thought to start afresh and with new hopes commenced with the fertility treatments under the supervision of another doctor in Gurgaon.

When I went to this new doctor, she conducted some tests and cautioned that the fibroid was growing further impacting my conception chances. We went for an MRI and the reports confirmed that my fibroid has increased to almost 4cms…I got my surgery (Myomectomy) done to remove the fibroid from my uterus and was told not to try for pregnancy for a few months.

A Ray Of Hope With Fertility Dost

During this phase, I was confused, tired mentally and emotionally drained. There was nobody around me with whom I could talk and cry out my pains. I wanted to fast forward my life. This was the time when I got to know about Fertility Dost from a friend of mine. Talking to Gitanjali, Founder of Fertility Dost, came as my biggest support. She encouraged me and my hopes arose again. Gitanjali added me to her WhatsApp support group where I got to know about numerous women who were sailing with me in the same ship. This gave me more confidence and courage to fight infertility. I focussed on improving my mental health. With lot of tears and difficult conversations with Gitanjali, I switched to an IVF centre in Gurgaon. There I underwent two embryo transfers and both turned out to be negative.

January 2019, The D- Day | Embryo Transfer

I was all devastated and limited my social gatherings. Then one day, my friend suggested me to go for the IVF centre where she had her twin daughters. It was January, 2019 when we went to that centre and had the first fresh transfer in March, where I did not conceive again. In August, the same year I went for my second transfer. This time the doctors took care of all the protocols and I went through blastocyst, laser hatching and embryo glue. The next few days were tough and I waited for that happy call.
